A Little Optimism Helps

Last week, the South was covered in snow. By day two, many people were complaining that the snow was still around, and by day three, people were starting to pull out their hair in protest of being stuck inside the “ice prison” that I found to be quite stunning. We had several inches of snow on the ground, icicles stretching out to almost two feet in length, and slippery slopes that were absolutely perfect for sledding. My family and I played outside for hours, and thankfully, no one got a cold or broke any legs… {Remember my winter warning? Handsome Husband is still hobbling around on a broken leg!}

Some of our friends started to complain about ‘cabin fever’ and having to stay in and eat food from home. The horror! I’m usually the first person to whine and fret over being stuck in the house, but I think that after being sick for almost two weeks, I have become accustomed to staying indoors. It just didn’t bother me so much. In fact, I actually enjoyed staying home with my family. Call me crazy, but it was fun to spend all day with my husband and child, playing together, eating warm soups and meals prepared in the comfort of my own kitchen, and watching reruns of ‘American Pickers’ and ‘Pawn Stars’ for hours on end.

My daughter found her own form of entertainment: Browsing through the U.S. Constitution and The Federalist Papers.

If I’ve learned anything over the course of 2010, it’s that you can’t let the little things bring you down and sour your mood. So many things happen in our lives that threaten our future ability to receive and process our happiness. Let me encourage you to always try to find something positive to focus on. A little bit of optimism goes a long way in ensuring the mental – and arguably, physical – health of yourself and your loved ones.

Remember: the ice will eventually melt away from the roads, but you’ve got to find a way to keep the ice from forming around your heart. A little optimism helps.
