Weaning a toddler is hard work. I started weaning my two year old a little over a week ago. I’ll admit – I cried, she cried. We couldn’t really cuddle up together at first because she could smell my milk and we would get into another crying fest.
A week later, and we are down to two feedings a day: when she first wakes up in the morning and right before bedtime. I still get the occasional, “Mommy, boobie?” and it still stings, even though she now accepts my refusals. I think that in some ways, it hurts worse because she so readily accepts my refusals.
I’m handling this new-found freedom a lot better than I expected. I understand that this special relationship had to end at some point, that I’ve done my very best to start my child off on a nutritious diet, and that I am not a “mean” mommy for taking away something that she loves so very much. It’s all a part of growing, for my daughter and for me.
I’m very surprised with the amount of food that she eats now. No one ever cautioned me about how ravenous a toddler’s appetite could become once the breastmilk was taken away. Sometimes I feel like the only thing I do all day is make food and wash our dishes. On a side note, my husband seems to appreciate the constant dish-washing that I do (I might mention that I’m having to do all the dishes by hand because our dishwasher is crap, but that is another post.)

Now if any of you have any suggestions/recommendations for ways to pay for all of this toddler-friendly (and vegan) food that we have to stock up on, now’s the time to suggest away!
